i wonder if part of the problem could be that accepted wisdom seems to say
that a cheap 10W-40 is fine for these engines. First thing we did when the
beetle arrived was change it to a synthetic 10W-50 with a bit of ZDDP.
It's certainly better in the snow than the 928

The rear crank oil seals can be an issue.
The 2.5 can suffer from cylinder liner cracking; some 3.2 cylinder heads
can suffer cracking around the exhaust valves. All capacities of these
engines can experience inadequate oiling under some conditions, so maybe there is
more in common with a 928 than initially appears the case! ;-)
There have been some horrendous numbers bandied about regarding the number
of Boxster engine failures, but bear in mind that these engines - M96 and
M97 - were designed as a common platform for the Boxster and 911.
There's a good, non-sensational article here:

Interested in peoples views on Boxsters (as an addition to the 928). How
do they handle the miles, for example 100k? Higher mileage 3.2 or lower
mileage 2.5? It will be for a weekend car, when maybe the weather gets a bit
better. Are rear crankshaft oil seals an issue as they are on 996s?
Views please...?
