I bought one of these from Steve last year. (G28.55)
It was a gamble at £1800 and bought sight un-seen.
It went straight to the mechanics for a look over who gave it the green light apart from the diff, which was shot. They charged me an extra £1000 for a new diff. (NON
PSD)
What the mechanics didn't tell me, however, was that the input shaft bearing was also shot. I don't know why they didn't tell me about this but its very annoying because
its now going to cost me another £1000+ for a new one.
Based on my experiences, I would estimate the repair costs to fix this gearbox be in the region of £4500 parts and labour if it needs a new gear set (2nd or 4th. (gear
sets are £1500 each, I think) and definitely not something for the amateur mechanic.
The ironic thing is that a 928 sold on ebay last week for just £1175 and had a BRAND NEW manual gearbox (allegedly).

This has been relisted a few times.
Probably a bit steep price for a broken box though? (I paid less for a working S2 manual box, although 2nd is a bit stiff to select going down the box)
What do you reckon it is worth in that state?
What would it cost to rebuild it with new internals, 1K in parts?
Is it something a non-experienced but mechanically minded person can do with the W/S manual in hand?
Thoughts?
Mike
