I've forwarded your reply to the list.
Only £1,250 for a used engine. I'm surprised.
The firm in question claim to be "Independent Porsche Specialists". They
have never claimed to be 928 specialists, but they did confirm when I first
used them 10 years ago that they are well versed in 928's and look after a
number. More often than not, when I have taken my car in there has been at
least one other 928 in the workshop.

I'm very sorry to hear about this problem. As far as liability is concerned,
it would depend on whether they just did exactly what they were told
(becuase they really know nothing about 928s) or whether they claimed they
were fully capable.
However in either case they have a duty of professional care, and if not
certain of their ability to do the job correctly should have declined to do
the check. I think you morally have a case, but it would be very hard to
prove to a court's satisfaction. Cheaper to buy a used engine for £1250 than
get legal.
Releasing the flex plate tension is only the first step in the annual thrust
bearing check. It should always be followed by a check of the end float on
the crank. 0.4mm max. They may have tried to lever the crank back and forth,
and thought "no play" when in fact the crank was already being welded/jammed
in the bearing/block. There should have beens some slight back and forth
play.
They should then have levered the crank fully to the rear of the car and
then retightened the flexplate drive clamp to 66 ft/lb.
