They usually stop because of corrosion behind the magnets pushing them into the rotating armature.  The early motor metal casing can be removed and it is possible to get the magnets out, clean the corrosion away and put it all back together and get a working motor.
I had to do this to both of mine on my 79.

Hi everyone,
The window motor on driver's side (UK) died a year after being replaced ( second hand).
I found a brand new one on ebay for around £ 70 which is a very good price but it is the 10 tooth one and I need an 8 tooth.
My question is does anyone know if I can swap the 8 tooted wheel from the old one to the new one or would that be impossible?
