[928uk] Battery for a 86 S2

An old battery left flat for a week will be pretty stuffed, so for
reliability I can understand Feisal wanting a new battery.

Your problem sounds like it was the battery charger not recognising a
flat battery as a battery. That is where a cheap basic battery charger
is a good option. As for batteries which won't take any charge current,
they often will if left on the charger long enough, but they probably
will never be very good.

I'm currently experimenting with a "desulphator", an electronic device
which applies short high voltage pulses to clean up the lead plates.
I'll report back when I know how well it works.
