This is an S2, so no ISV buried under the intake. Airleaks around the injector seals sounds feasible.

But the total charges are too high.

How many hours labour? If he replaced the idle stabilizer, that could easily be 8 hours, another 8 hours for the timing belt, and some more hours for diagnosis, so I think it would be difficult to argue that 20 hours would be unreasonable.

The thrust bearing causing stalling is something that will have happened when the thrust bearing wear past a critical point, nothing to do with what was done, but a sign of lack of the correct maintenance over the entire life of the engine.

Gents, thanks for your replies. The car went in for a timing belt and high tickover, about 1400 rpm. I new timing belt would be about £400 to £450 so guessed another couple for sorting the high tickover. Any time I've dealt with a garage they will call you before any large expense. He replaced 3 injector O rings and 2 air valves which he bought second hand at £20 and £120. The rest is labour but its not itemised. I've spoken to consumer direct and it comes down to what a reasonable person would reasonably expect for this type of work. I dont think £500 to £600 is reasonable for a high tickeover, especially since I was not contacted before. Furthermore I bought the replacement engine on his advice but now the original engine is running, I wouldn't have bought it if I knew my car war still running ok. I have doubts about his abilities and truthfulness and is it just coincidence that the engine failed so soon after he worked on it? The whole thing stinks to be honest.

Basically I just want the car back but I dont feel I should pay over £1000 for this work. Its also difficult paying anything for what is now a knackered engine (or presumably a knackered engine) but I have offered £700, which he has turned down.

Youi need them to tell you what the crank end float is now, in order to determine whether the engine in the car is in fact OK. (which sounds very doubtful to me)

You also need to do the same check on your "new" engine.

A thrust bearing isn't repaired by relieving the flex-plate pre-load, all that has done is releive the symptoms. So you still probably need the replacement engine.

How much time did they spend on the idle problem and what new parts did they fit?

What are you disputing with the garage, the cost of fixing the high idle, or the money you have spent on the spare engine?

I have a problem with my 928 - I don't have it. I'm looking for a recommendation of any solicitors who are good at dealing with garage disputes, maybe Graham has gone down this route already? Briefly it goes back to last June when I put my 928 into a Porsche specialist in Glasgow for timing belt and a high tickover problem. When I picked it up I didn't pay cause he didn't have the bill ready but after driving 30 miles it started stalling. It went back and he diagnosed TBF and a new engine. I sourced my own engine and then 3 weeks later (he was in hospital) he told me he released the flex plate and engine running ok but I was due over £1000 for earlier work!! I had already spent £500 on a new engine plus over £200 total delivery. Furthermore that worked out about £600 to sort out the high tickover! Any advice welcome.

          Cheers
