Hi Mike,
Good report - congratulations on the purchase.
How did you manage 26mpg? I've had my S4 over 10 years and never got more
than 24mpg from a tank-full. 20mpg is much more typical.
Re the pressure sensors, it may be worth removing the spacers first to check
the sensors work properly. An alternative is to disable the sensors, which
many people do anyway. The procedure is quite simple and its on the
website. If you can't find it, give me a shout and I will send the link.
The procedure for engaging first gear is correct. If it doesn't engage
every time I suspect the linkage needs some adjustment, but I'm no expert.
I sure someone more knowledgeable will have the answer. Also expect a few
comments along the lines of if you had a manual you wouldn't have these
problems in the first place!
Finally, you have probably already done so, but if not, check the cambelt
has been changed recently (within last 4 years) and that the flex plate has
been properly checked.
Regards.
Graham (91 S4)

Hey everyone, I collected the S4 from Cambridge on Thursday and drove 360
miles back to Edinburgh. It returned 26 mpg and didn't miss a beat. As
soon as I got home I had to go out again with my kids on board. The seller
had prepared a great folder full of paperwork; service receipts, repair
procedures, a page of things to look out for and idiosyncrasies, and very
kindly gave me a couple of books on 928s. You don't get that when you buy a
Volvo.
I will send some pictures soon but it looks like any very tidy original 89
S4 apart from the lovely Momo steering wheel. He also fitted rear wheel
pacers which means the pressure loss sensors keep coming on, a d it looks a
bit more butch I guess. Does anyone know of extensions that would allow the
useful sensors to work with the spacers? Any opinions about rear wheel
spacers? It certainly seems to handle ridiculously well. This afternoon,
after cleaning, polishing, checking over levels etc, I went for a burn.
Going for a burn in a car is a fairly alien concept to me as it's something
I associate with motorcycles. Cars are for grown- ups right? I used to
spend every weekend riding a 1975 Kawasaki Z1b all over the UK just for fun.
I still have it but I think I just moved over to cars......People say the
928 is a handful on B roads. I think it's great and I love B roads. The
B709 from Heriot to Carlisle is one of my favourites. You don't get police
on B roads much, or
speed cameras ever and as my main car is a Volvo V70R, I think the 928 is
relatively nimble, though that 99 V70R defies its size.
The seller explained and demonstrated to me that to engage first gear and
feel the full thrust of that 5L V8, you need to move the shifter to 2 and
floor it. I tried this a few times and it only engaged first once or twice.
When it did mind you, the rears just spun leaving me thinking what's the
point ( in the wet) . So what is the technique, for dry days? Am I
doing something wrong?
He also had some engine mapping work done and I have to say the throttle
response is amazing and the mpg better than most people advise.
Oh and considering the worn brake discs, they work beautifully.
So do I like it? Am I pleased? 100 %
