Engine mapping, on a car from Cambridge, perhaps JDS would like to comment.

26mpg - as others have suggested, perhaps a miscalculation...

S4 Brake discs are not so expensive, I think about £130 (front pair) from
ECP.

Auto boxes - I know nothing other than the deadly Achilles Heal that they
introduced - TBF. Do not underestimate the potential for uneconomic repairs
if your car suffers Thrust Bearing Failure.

Similarly the other type of TBF, if the timing belt lets go, the car
effectively has no value.

I'm not familiar with the Heriot - Carlisle road, but I really do like the
A6 through Shap, despite it's deadly reputation. I'll have to check out the
B709 next time I'm in the area.

After the preventative maintenance mentioned above, you're most likely to
appreciate an investment in new shocks considering the B roads you enjoy.
