I think the trick is to avoid any oil or sealant on the gasket faces, as that will encourage it to slide out of place Just a dab of Hylomar in each corner.

  Agreed, it is probably from the cam-box gasket, if it was the head gasket the oil would be below the exhaust manifold.
  What I would recommend is loosening (just 1/4 turn) all the cam-box to head screws first. If they all move, it will be quicker to do with the engine in the car. If one of the bottom ones is seized, plan to remove the engine.
  I had one seized, so the socket head rounded, and I had to grind the head off. But there isn't enough room for a drill or grinder, so I had a grinding wheel on a flexible drive, fastened to a handle so I could poke it up the gap from underneath.
  When I was putting it back together I managed to mangle the gasket. I can't remember what the problem was, but be careful putting it back together that as you screw it down, it clamps down evenly, and that the gasket is not moved.
