My 5 penny worth,
Only use a new water pump – never use a rebuild. Only use a water pump with a plastic impeller.
This will ensure you do not experience the mass of failures due to rebuild of rebuilds (compromised interference fits of the seal cartridge) and the dreaded movement of the metal impeller backwards off the shaft and into the block with catastrophic results.
I will not sell rebuilt water pumps and have been selling exclusively Laso & Porsche WP’s for the last nearly three years with only three recorded failures out of circa 2000 WP’s sold. These failures were leaking seal cartridges and they all gave advanced warning by leaking out of the front weep hole as designed. All replaced under warranty.
Hope that helps,
Roger
PS: Current consensus – if you know the history of your WP – new with plastic impeller – remove and check for bearing wear and play – if good reinstall and carry on.

Subject: [928uk] 928 vs PK tensioner
Hi Everyone,
I'm just about to do the large service including timing belt, tensioner, water pump etc, etc, etc and have been reading articles for a while now regarding the water pump and tensioner issues. Is there any consensus around the benefits of the PK tensioner to improve the situation? It just seems very strange that we have had so many water pump related issues from so many vendors. One can't help but imagine that the original design imposed abnormal stresses on the associated components.
I apologise in advance if you've been round this issue too many times but having read everything I can, I still have this unresolved.
Best Regards,
Mike H
