Thanks for the reply helpful as at least I now know it can be done, out of interest is the car better to drive on the four speed ?

Hi Jon,

My '81 was converted to 4 speed without too much bother apparently. But was before I bought her, so can't expand. 

It was done by Loe Bank motors in Bury.

Hello all, I was asked today be another owner who has a 928 3 speed auto and the box is on its way out if it’s possible as he has to change to go for the later 4 speed box , I don’t know so asking if anyone here has made this change?
