[928uk] S2 / S4

There are more bells an whistles on the S4, so potentially more to go 
wrong, but you could run into problems with an S2 due to parts not being 
available (I think fuel injectors and ABS sensors aren't available). 
But, how expensive a car will be to maintain will depend more on how it 
has been maintained in the past than whether it's an S2 or S4.

Difference I can think of:
S4 engine has twice the number of valves, flappy valve intake, knock 
sensors and  idle stabilising system to make it more complicated, but 
benefits form more mid range torque, a bit more peak power and slightly 
better economy.
1986 onwards (late S2 and all S4) get more powerful brakes (which can be 
a maintenance expense if the callipers are corroded) and more adjustable 
seats.
Things like the electric (rather than vacuum) operated cruise control on 
the later cars do work better and are more reliable, so not all the 
improvements are maintenance worries.

It's probably best to look for a well maintained car than a specific 
model, unless the styling differences matter a lot to you.
