[928uk] Overheating

I too replaced my thermostat (a year ago). The back seal was actually missing on my car (s4). I too thought it was overheating as the temp gauge very quickly rose to way higher than I'd ever seen it. I spent hours burping the system with the car on steep ramps in both directions but still the gauge sat just below the 2nd last mark (about 2/3 up the gauge) whereas previously it rarely hit half way except in heavy traffic.

I then ran it with a thermocouple in the expansion tank and noted the thermostat opening around 85 deg C and fans coming on about 88. I think it was Paul L who told me this is about right.

So I stopped worrying and drove it. And for the last year the gauge has risen pretty quickly to the 2/3 up position and stayed there no matter what I do.

The point is that previously it was under heating and the temperature was varying dramatically both due to to the missing back seal but now it behaves much like a modern car except with a gauge that shows 2/3 instead of half at normal temperature.

Hope this helps.
