Hi Brian I have found best way to remove pins is to use them as their own puller by using spacers and huge washers. Grease threads well and use nut to pull 6 to 8 mm at a time then remove nut and re space. Keep repeating.
If you do not excede wsm torque for assy torquing of nuts you wont harm pin threads.
Incidentally nuts are only use once for stiff nut properties. Use a small amount of low strength locktite on threads and reuse nut if not corroded. Have done this on both my 82s and 83s. No problems.
Do final torque up with weight on wheels so shock bush rubber in unstressed position with weight on wheels.
Can send pics of pulling pin if you emailme off list.
