I had an Audi RS2 for six years. It was the original and best lunatic estate car but very expensive to run. The Cayenne is close and a natural evolition for me and cheaper to run but not nearly such a Q car. I think an M5 Touring would be a really fun choice but the stock brakes aren’t as good as our Porsche Brembo’s (fade on a trip to Le Mans in a V10 just spirited normal driving) and you have to wonder about extraordinary costs to look after them now they are getting on. I loved my e39 M5 which I had before the Cayenne. We also looked at the M6 Convertible - there are some bargains (or gift horses depending on your POV) around.

I’m not a fan of the X5 although it you are going to have one I agree have the lunatic motor. Its the diesels I dislike. and some of the Dash setup just isn’t to my taste. I was over at Porsche Brooklands today and they had a Gemballa Cayenne turbo out front - that looked properly lunatic to me - tonka toy wheel arches and giant black wheels, mesh bonnet grills. Transformers rear sill. Too much ? maybe :) Residuals wise the Macan Turbo they have for sale is a thing of beauty and sensible. Boat load of dough upfront though.

In other news I bought a Golf R Cab in the summer - half the price of a boxster or older 911 which were the other convertible options. On the face of it far more practical, with balance of manufacturer warranty, 2 years free servicing and a zillion extras. It really does have room for four adults too - unlike the bmw 6 series which has no room at all for such a big car, likewise 911. I totally love the golf. Its 2WD with 265PS DSG (PDK) with paddle shifts and normal and sport/lunatic drive programmes so I think it might be a handful in the winter but I had a 16V Jetta company car once and then a Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo Carlsson that was the same front wheel drive ‘you better hold the wheel’ feeling so I think it will be fine.
