My race car is based on a very late 1985 (1986MY) Turbo. There is something to be said about the earlier cars - very similar to the 928 - somehow they feel lighter and more nimble on their feet. The chassis has done 260k miles. We rebuilt the transaxle last year. These Audi derived units are tough as old boots. Pinion bearing had some pitting and the 3/4 th gear synchros were on their way out. But the rest of the box was perfect.

We swapped later style clutch discs, shims and conical washers for higher pre-load in the LSD.

Overall, not bad for 260k very hard miles. On par with the spare GT transmission that I have in the garage.

Vince is right - the 2.5 8v off boost is not great - it makes about 140bhp as a NA engine (did a Dyno run with the boost pipes disconnected to find out :) Driving experience could be described as - nothing, nothing, nothing, 3000rpm - whoa! whoa! my God! hold on, hold on! Change gear, whoa! whoa! Rinse and repeat. But if you come off boost - the lag is epic.

>> Overall though - a lot of fun to drive and despite being full of ancient VW suspension technology like the rear torsion beam, it is still the 2nd best handling road going Porsche ever made after the Boxster/Cayman. Turbos were two a penny 3 years ago, now a good one is £15k plus. A proper one is £20k and totally worth it.

Not a car for a leisurely drive; turbo kicks in around 3000rpm, change gear at red line 6500ish I recall, no guts when turbo not spinning! So you have just over 3000 to work with, an all or nothing experience when I drove one from london to Manchester over the Peak District!
