[928uk] Throttle Cable Routing

Hi Patrick,Adrian has given perfect advice already and I agree it certainly sounds that the throttle quadrant cable has come off it's pulley wheel at the rear of the engine.However, although I can imagine it possible for the cable from pedal to quadrant to come off (the one you already replaced) this should not be able to make the other cable come off the pulley wheel.I'm sure something else must be going on here, a sticking throttle plate for example.You will be able to locate the nylon pulley wheel under the airbox and loop the cable back on (it's fiddly) but before you then put everything back please operate the throttle quadrant (you described as brass connector) by hand and watch / listen to the operation around the pulley wheel. A tiny movement slowly from idle and you should hear a click from the throttle switch. Operate from closed to full open several times slowly and quickly observing that the cable does not go loose on the nylon pulley at any time. You should not be able to make that cable go loose or come off the pulley no matter how fast you operate it !Hopefully you can just put things back and it will be fine. Good morning all,

 

1987 S4 Auto

 

The throttle cable on my 1987 S4 Auto has detached itself where it attaches
to the brass connector on the side of the intake (where the 3 other cables
are). Easy enough, I thought, and just popped it back on.

 

Trouble is, now there is loads of play in the cable (perhaps 1cm or more)
and I suspect it has come off something else, either at the pedal end or
somewhere in between. When I floor the accelerator I get maybe 1,500 to
2,000 revs max.

 

Is there an easy to follow picture guide that shows how the cable is routed
(as well as the other cables as the bottom cable is now very loose too)? 

 

Also, is this job within the ability of a ham-fisted home mechanic without
specialist tools or will I need to be recovered somewhere as the car is not
driveable?
