Hi Ian,

If you've not visited the Mercedes museum, you're at a disadvantage in this.
Bear in mind I was very much looking forward to the Porsche museum, and I
was particularly disappointed, having seen the Mecedes one first. However,
Porsche show about 80 vehicles plus a variety of historical models; the
Mercedes museum has 160 vehicles and over 1500 exhibits. The Porsche one
doesn't show the context in which Porsche arose and flourished, whilst the
Mercedes one does have it all in context. That's why I refer to the Porsche
one as a 'showroom'. Equally true, the Mercedes one has a genuinely huge
showroom/building attached to it with every vehicle they sell. I
particularly liked the dissected S600 showing how all the safety gear
worked. I escaped buying an S-class only by the skin of my teeth...

I'm envious of your experience in seeing the Porsche factory; that, I've
never managed,

All the best,

Chris M

Chris,

Having visited the both the museum and the factory a couple of years ago, I
can't agree with your comments.

The museum is I agree, a display of expensive cars which I understand are
regularly changed; I went when the transaxle display was featured. Most car
museums are similar, Haynes, Beaulieu etc and the number of vehicles on
display far exceeds anything I have seen in the UK. Many of my Porsche
owner friends have also been to the museum and they all enjoyed the trip.

In addition there is an excellent audio tour in many languages and entry
includes a 2 hour factory guided tour all for 8 Euros. Beaulieu is twice
that price.

There is also a train station directly behind the museum so great position
for travelling.

There are 3 restaurants all licensed, plus lockers for your coats, bags,
phones etc.

I was planning to visit the Mercedes museum but ran out of time and if you
say this is better than Porsche it must be excellent, so I shall put on my
to do list.

Hence Mike, or anyone else, if you are planning to visit Stuttgart I would
recommend the museum, I wrote an article in All Torque which was well
received.

Regards

Ian

On the subject of emissions, I looked at getting the appropriate sticker for
my '89 S4 so that I could visit my friends in Stuttgart, and eventually we
found the appropriate person in the Stuttgart TuV HQ. The answer is that you
can take your 928 (with its appropriate UK test results) to the TuV offices,
where an appropriate engineer will study them, look at the car and (maybe)
provide the magic sticker. This
(https://www.stuttgart.de/en/item/show/573353) goes into much more detail
and appears to suggest that you can email your test results to them and get
the sticker...

Re the Porsche museum in Stuttgart; ignore it. It's a glorified, very
expensive, showroom with a few old cars. If you want to see a 1st class
museum, visit the Mercedes one in Stuttgart. That does a wonderful job of
explaining the creation and rise of the automobile, putting Germany's role
during the various wars in context. It's a day-long trip and well worth it.
The bars are very well run as well. You won't see anything like that at
Porsche, regardless of the fact that Ferdinand created a number of tanks for
the war; they do have a Kubelwagen, and that's about it. The factory at
Zuffenhausen is within the low emission zone, as is almost every part of
Stuttgart...

Hey,

<snip>

2. Emissions sticker. On one hand it says apply for one through a website (
berlin.de) or get it at a station on the way but looking at the site no
stickers are issued for vehicles registered before 1993 and in that case my
car would not be able to go into any low emission zones? I'm not sure I
will be going to any city centres anyway and I'm not sure if the Porsche
factory and museum is in the city centre.

Regards,
Mike
