You don't need a classic car mechanic, just one who was working on cars in
the '80s when k-jetronic was common.
You can do it yourself, you do need a special tool (an extra long Allen
key), and you need to follow the instructions in the workshop manual
carefully.
I wouldn't rely on smell though, I weaken till it starts to hunt, then
richen until it bogs, then set it in the middle. That will get it idling
smoothly, but whether it will pass the MoT is another matter.
