Adrian,
I think you are right and you are wrong :) Europe has been far more draconian in terms of ULEZ implementation- Germany for example and the Green Plakette. Yet, there people still drive classics and benefit from various allowances- like you voluntarily agreeing to restricted mileage, no mods etc, but in return getting lower taxes or being allowed to enter the big cities.
What personally worries me is the ever so creeping Big Brother. Can you imagine (the shock horror) You, and just You being in control of a 1.5tonnes of metal powered by a 320bhp petrol engine?!! No DSC/ASC/Lane departure/Radar Cruise Control/Autonomous driver assist?!! Just think of the children!!!
We all know about the EU Directive coming into force in 2022. Yes, it won’t affect older cars in the letter of the law. However, how long before Insurance Cos begin to insist on us fitting black boxes to our classics? And yes, we would have the option of not fitting them but the offset would be premiums at levels multiple of black box premises. In my mind that is what would kill the classic car in the future. Gvts and business driving you off the road via higher premium for insurance.
The £12.5 per day for the ULEZ in the context of a £2000 per annum budget to keep a 928 in good shape is not very much. Face a £2k insurance bill and a £1k road tax bill and things do take on a different dimension...
