HVAC/air con issues

Just back from a trip to Germany where the air con started to struggle to keep the car cool.

The air con is defintely working (the pipe from the compressor is ice cold and has condensation on it). However the compressor is getting noisy - an intermittent rattle that sounds like a bearing is going. Do I need a new compressor?

But the air from the centre vent blows fairly cool from the top vent, but there seems to be hot air seeping in on the lower vent. Do I have a flap/vacuum problem?

The car is an 89 S4 - any advice very welcome!
