[928uk] Steering Rack Bushes

Hi Alex,

 

Do you have a VW part number for the donut or know which VW vans it fits ?

 

FWIW I have had solid aluminium bushes fitted to the GT since about 2009 and haven’t really noticed any difference in vibration versus the completely knackered original rubber bushes. The difference in steering feel/precision is however, night and day.

Yes - I have done it an all four 928s that have been through my hands. It is a 30yrs old part which sits very close to the exhaust headers. It is a heavy duty part, which is normally fitted to VW Vans, but any rubber will deteriorate in this environment. The rubber donut is not available separately from Porsche, but you can buy the VW part and re-fit the Porsche bronze bushes. £10 instead of the £450 that Porsche wants for the steering column with the rubber bush attached to the end of it.

That is not what I wanted in the 928, however the 928 has a rubber isolator in the steering column

 

I had to replace the isolator in a Capri I owned many years ago because it became very soft indeed

 

Has anyone had to replace the 928 isolator?

However, I fitted Delrin recently and had actually forgotten all about them until I read your thread

 

This suggests that there's no noticeable increase in vibration, but I've only done one return journey of 250 miles so far

Aluminium bushes here in both my GTS and my GTS race car. No noticeable increase in vibration. Steering precision was increased indeed. I also run much more aggressive geometry though, so that would have definitely helped. Had them made by a machinist in BG - think the two sets were £40 all in.
