ran out of fuel now 928s2 wont start

hi all,
as always hope you can assist. yes i am daft for dicing with such a scenario knowing the intermittent characteristics of my fuel gauge but i thought i would chance it last night and the inevitable happened - ran out of fuel! so i topped up with 1 gallon (regular jerry can capacity) and still no joy. however i realised this morning i did not prime the fuel pump so i will give that a go later today, so ignition on - leave for 5 seconds, ignition off - repeat 4 or 5 times.
if this does not work is there anything else i could check e.g. pump fuse - perhaps during fuel starvation overheated? the battery is fine and the car cranks up but does not want to start...
any suggestions greatly welcomed!
