Ben,
Richard’s offer sounds very generous and I would be seriously tempted to take him up on it. The alternative to sleeve the block is not cheap - had to have it done on my race car. The Westwood liners alone were about £400 before machining, which can easily run into another £500+ on top.
By the way, the 4.5 block’s cylinder walls are not that thin - they would easily support having 1mm taken from their radius.
Last but not least, I have another suggestion - Luxury Car Spares in Battle, Hastings seem to be the pre-eminent 928 braker at the moment. I have dealt with them in the past and found them to be super reasonable. They always have 4.5 and 4.7 engines in stock. Perhaps you can work a deal with them where you buy the engine, you pop it open and if all is good (just normal wear) they get paid in full, and if it is a turd, they don’t. I am sure there are ways around it. As I said earlier, while not a charity I found them to be straight and good to deal with when I was buying transmission parts as well as various trims/suspension parts.
Hope this helps,
Alex
