Hi Peter
Technically PET is the software/online version of the parts catalogue. It can be very useful at times as it shows which other 928s (and other Porsches) shared certain parts, as well as showing prices if kept updated online.
But you can go an awful long way using the ‘printed’ version which you can download here using the dropdown menus and selecting your model 928:
https://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/classic/genuineparts/originalpartscatalogue/
I use this much more than the electronic version. Not only for finding part numbers (for ordering or checking whether one on eBay is correct for your car say), but the diagrams themselves can be very useful for maintenance work. It also contains a huge amount of other info regarding options, engine and transmission codes, decoding VIN numbers etc.
The best guide to different systems is in the workshop manual, and especially the technical information bulletins issued at the start of every new model year and detailing all the changes. You can purchase CDs containing the workshop manual as well as these service information bulletins.
Happily though the 928 though relatively small in numbers, is one of the best documented classics out there. People have gone to heroic lengths to document service procedures and/or explain systems. A site such as this contains copious info on all the main jobs 928 owners can tackle, and this is just one of many such sites. Just casual googling will lead you to some fine collections of 928 ‘bookmarks’. I’m not enough of a natural mechanic to consider maintaining my car without this kind of support, but there are also plenty of naturals on the 928.org.uk list who have an uncannily deep knowledge of virtually every aspect of every 928 of every stripe if you have a query:

Hope this helps for now and keep the questions coming!
