[928uk] releasing crankshaft pulley and harmonic balancer

Makes perfect sense Dan.

What I can’t quite understand is why they went to the time and trouble, presumably at my expense ☹ of heating and pulling the crankshaft cambelt gear at all. I supplied two of the flange washers in case they found the oil seal was leaking and had to replace it. But they said the oil seal was fine, so why pull the gearwheel?

Jonathan,

I’ve recently replaced all sprockets as part of the timing belt job and the rear flange washer came off using a two jaw gear puller which damaged the old flange but pulled the crankshaft gear with it. I didn’t need to apply any heat. The jaws hooked behind the flange pulling both out at the same time.

Cheers

Dan

Turns out the heat was used to help release the crankshaft timing belt gear, because I supplied them with two of the large flange washers in case they were needed, so they removed the gear in order to fit the rear flange washer. Then they couldn’t get the idler off, so we agreed the old rear flange washer should stay in place anyway! Wish they’d rung and told me the gear was proving difficult and then I’d have said just to leave it alone. I’ve been assured by them that not much heat was used and the oil seal will be okay… …

I meant after removing the bolt, which just needs brute strength.

I would not, just grab it on each side and try to rock it. For a long time nothing seems to happen and then it starts to rock and you can wiggle it off.

Guys, your views please: Is it reasonable to use heat to release the crankshaft pulley and/or harmonic balancer?
