Don't assume the CPS is okay. They usually become intermittent before 
failing completely, and when they are intermittent they are often 
temperature dependant. I would say that sudden complete failure of the 
CPS is less common although it has happened to me. Without an 
oscilloscope to check for the correct waveform, you can just check for 
continuity.
