[928uk] No start.

I literally haven’t got a bad word to say about the service I have received from Porsche Hull over the past year or so; they have just completed the timing belt and water pump on my 1985 928 S2, and have just completed quite a large amount of other work on my 1989 911 as well (MOT/Service/Re-wiring/replaced both heater boxes, and even some paint!).

In fact, not only was it all priced very fairly, they actually went well over and above on a number of areas at no cost! They even chucked in a massive bag of Porsche Merch as well which was nice! 😊

The staff have all been an absolute credit to the business, and even remember your name when you walk in even if not expected for an appointment.

Credit where credit is due, and I think good service should be acknowledged! 😊

Cheers
Shane

They’re a very decent and friendly bunch at Solihull (Sytner group) Jonathan, and I source parts there occasionally. One time I was there a keen new service manager was cooing over my S4, and asked if they could do any work on it. At the time I knew it would need an alignment after suspension work, so asked her to quote for alignment. It could be that after being so keen to get some work, she felt embarrassed to then up the charge though it would have been reasonable.

They weren’t too bothered about my presence. Took so long I had time to go to lunch, and they were still at it for some time after I got back to the dealership!

Adrian, that is amazing, I’ve never heard of that happening from anyone before. Maybe the fact that you were there kept waiting made them feel guilty, or maybe alignments are a fixed price service item.

Fixed price routine servicing is not unusual, but it seems that for all other work only estimates (as distinct from quotations) are given.

I had a different experience with OPC Solihull, who I’ve only used on one occasion to do alignment after I changed lower ball joints and outer tie rods and rack mounts.

They quoted me £125, but had a helluva job freeing off one or two of the rear adjusters, so it was in their lovely alignment bay for about five hours while they worked on it (one of those glass sided bays, so I knew they were working on it all that time!).

They stuck to the £125!

But yes, a less generous OPC might end up charging huge amount for stubborn CPS.

My experience of an OPC, from many years ago, is that they happily quote based on a factory estimated job time and then with the car apart they ring to tell you it is proving difficult and will cost a whole lot more – i.e. based on the time the job takes. After that I stopped using the OPC and found an independent workshop with a guy that loved 928’s and quoted realistic job times. When he sadly left that workshop I started doing work on the car myself. My recent experience of an independent workshop is that they too estimate optimistic job times and then charge more based on the time the job takes.

With independent workshops charging over £100+vat an hour, and an OPC charging goodness knows how much more (anyone know?), and with a CPC change possibly taking 6 hours plus… well you can do the maths ☹

If they have job times set by the factory, it could be cheap, if they
charge for the time it might take, it would be very expensive.

I think mine might be on borrowed time too.
