Gear selector quadrant lighting

I don’t often drive my car at night but yesterday was an exception returning home from Gatwick after a holiday.  While dash and HVAC lights work properly, there is no light behind the gear selector which I assume there should be.  The car is 1988 S4 so can someone tell me what I need to do to get this working?  Please keep it simple lol!
