When we rebuilt my 165k mile GT engine last year the thrust bearing was
worn down to the copper. Manuals load the thrust bearing too.
Like yours the heads were a state and needed weld and skimming. The block
was okay, but as you know ignoring the known heads corrosion issue risks
corrosion to the block.
