[928uk] 3 speed gear change rpm

All this fun chat about my bloody 3 speed has reminded me that when I got the car someone had bodged in a thick red cable and toggle switch near the steering wheel. I assumed it was an ignition switch by pass and blindly cut it out (I never traced the wires back to where they were connected - my bad).
Now Im wondering (since my ignition all seems good and Im been in that area quite a bit) if the switch was actually a kickdown trigger. More when I get in there (and locate the wires I snipped!)
Todd.

Wow, fancy going to the trouble of adding a relay, but not making that switch the inductive load.
I know that the latest cars (perhaps just 94-95) had a throttle movement sensitive version so it kicked down due to fast movement of the pedal as well as WoT, but even then the power to the solenoid is still controlled by the switch.
Note that the "'speedo' FCU relay on the CE panel" is only there on cars after they changed to getting the speed signal from the ABS, up to 1990 they got the speed signal from the reed switch on the back of the diff.

The kickdown relay on later models was added to allow kickdown to be disconnected electronically in certain circumstances. The kickdown relay contains electronics and receives a speed signal from the 'speedo' FCU relay on the CE panel.

The gearbox cable is definitely adjustable though, sorry I can’t explain the exact steps.

It is located slightly right of centre if you're looking from the front of the car, and is situated behind the airbox on or near the bell housing, so if you take off your airbox and look down behind the bulkhead, standing on the left hand side of the car you should be able to see it. I can't remember in detail exactly how to tension it but it is fairly obvious.
