Jeff if you buy a set of aircon gauges cheap on eBay you can do a lot of diagnosis yourself, also a vacuum pump will allow you to test for leaks with same gauge set.

Does the compressor clutch definitely engage and run pulley? That will at least eliminate gross leaks.
