Early ones, the outer joint (the cylindrical part) is bolted to the
wheel drive flange in the same way that the inner one is bolted onto the
diff drive flange. Then (1981???) they changed so that the outer joint
is welded to the wheel drive flange. Then (1984???) they had "teeth"
added for the ABS, then (1987???) the number of "teeth" changed.
Other than getting the correct number of "teeth" for the ABS if you need
them, I believe they are all interchangeable.
Swapping side to side should even out wear, it certainly doesn't cause
any problems.

If it’s at a slight angle it will slip and damage the bolt. When you come to do this it will make more sense as it’s not so easy to explain.

I bought a torque wrench specifically for this job a few years back, so to buy or borrow one is by the easiest option. There is a more scientific way to do the job involving weights and a breaker bar etc but I took the simple route.
