The suspension geometry changed in '86, that is probably what changes
the handling feel.
The change to the large diameter single plate clutch, and the increases
in mid-range torque, in '87, mean that the the S engine has a more
rev-happy feel.
Early synchros wear out faster, but later gear-changes feel stiffer.
S4 autos might feel a bit less lively because of a higher overall
gearing, but I wouldn't know about that.
YMMV

That's interesting. Anyone suggest why that would be as I don't think the actual weight changed significantly?

How light a car feels can often be down to steering assistance levels, but did the 928 power steering get heavier in the later cars?

If you're talking manuals (probably are) do the later gearboxes feel heavier to shift? That might (partially) account for it.

Another factor can be the weight, or spring of the accelerator pedal. A heavy/stiff pedal makes a car feel heavier to me. Conversely, a nice light throttle pedal makes a car feel lighter and faster (same for 'weight' of twist-grip on motorcycles). Did that perhaps increase for the later cars?

And somehow it feels smaller and lighter than the GTSs. Which is really nice: I really like the feel of the S2 manual.
