I think that should be 2023, (2013 is probably a typo,) when I pointed
out that finally Porsche had recognised that 928s need a -50 oil.
And I think we recently established that the new formulation of VR1 is fine.
The wording about the Porsche Classic 10W-50 are Porsche marketing's
words, so I would suggest that the implication that it is the best, is
just marketing talk.
The reality is that in our climate you don't need a thin "winter" grade
for cold starting, so a 15W-50 or 20W-50 is fine. Then consider that the
more viscosity modifiers an oil needs to make a bigger difference
between the two numbers, the shorter it's life is, then it makes more
sense to stick with a 20W-50.
Also remember that the ZDDP doesn't start to lay down it's protection
until the oil is 80 plus degrees, so you need to get the engine fully
warm every time you use it.
I would be confident that the Porsche 10W-50 is good, but probably
vastly overpriced at £90 for 5l. And I don't think Porsche deserve our
money when they recommended -40 oils for so long when we all knew that
the 928 needs a -50.

I think that at one stage Valvoline VR1 SAE 20/50 engine oli was
recommended for our V8s due to the high zinc content. Looking at the VR1
Racing Oil now, it seems it is a new formulation, but still with a high
(? high enough?) zinc content. Is this still okay for the 928, or should
I go with the 2013 article on the 928.org site which seems to suggest
that the Porsche Classic 10/50 might be better?
Best regards,
Don.
