Mmmmm. That doesn't account for the version that came in in '82, 6 
position (0, ECOv, ECO^v, [], ^v, def) rather than 5 position (OFF, ECO, 
AUTO, BI, Def) of my '80.
These are also confirmed by the wiring diagrams, and where I have seen 
that for 1980 and 82 the automatic AC was "optional for 928". The wiring 
for '84 confirms they have 6 positions  (OFF, [], v, ^v, ^, def) and 
separate A/C button. The 84 service tech doc even mentions the loss of 
"eco" positions.
The 80-83.5 part number may well be compatible with all those years, but 
it can't be the same as the 80 and 82 versions with different numbers of 
positions.

No, it has the separate bank of vac solenoids. My understanding is that 
the "manual" ones control the vac directly but the "automatic" version 
is similar to later versions.
